Volleyball Downs Texas State in Another Five-Set Thriller

Freshman outside hitter Jasmine Casey led the Huskies with 16 kills in the Huskies' win over Texas State Thursday.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Houston Baptist University fought past Texas State, 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-11), for another five-set victory over a Southland Conference foe in the opener of the CenturyLink Premier Thursday night at Strahan Coliseum.

 

HBU freshman outside hitter Jasmine Casey led the Huskies (7-2) with 16 kills and added five digs. Junior outside hitter Heather Leaverton recorded her fourth double-double and fifth-straight match with double-digit digs with 11 kills and 12 digs. Senior middle blocker Jolie Graf, senior outside hitter Christie Dorch and sophomore middle blocker Caiti Wenger each had nine kills, with Graf adding six blocks.

 

Junior setter Victoria Weatherly recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 45 assists – tied for the second-highest total in her career – 15 digs, six kills and three blocks. Senior libero Courtney Whittleman led the Huskies defensively with 25 digs.



"It was great getting out there and pulling together as a team to win this match," Casey said. "It was a big win for usand everyone did their parts to contribute, even though we had a few changes."

 

Amari Deardorff led Texas State with 16 kills, while Ashley Hilbun added 12. Laura Whalen led the Bobcats with 22 digs and Rachel Doyle had 14.

 

Texas State hit .273 for the match, while HBU hit .203. The Bobcats outdug the Huskies, 76-68, and outblocked them, 8-7. HBU defeated Sam Houston State in five sets Tuesday and UT-San Antonio in five sets last Thursday.

 
The Huskies continue action in the tournament when they face New Mexico State Friday at 1 p.m., followed by Northwestern State at 5 p.m.
