Late Surge Lifts Binghamton Past Huskies, 4-1

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Binghamton scored four goals in a 14-minute span as the Bearcats defeated Houston Baptist, 4-1, on the final day of the WVU Nike Classic Sunday afternoon.

Francisco Diaz scored for the Huskies on his only shot in the match. Kristopher Tyrpak and Leonel Munoz each had an assist. Marcos Escobar came off the bench and had a team-high three shots.

Daniel Boyer played all 90 minutes, allowing four goals and making three saves.

Jake Keegan led Binghamton with seven shots, three on goal and one goal and an assist. Luke Halberg had a goal and two assists.

Anthony Sokalski played all 90 minutes in goal, allowing one goal and making two saves.

HBU entered halftime leading 1-0 as Diaz scored in the 10th minute, assisted by Munoz and Tyrpak. Tyrpak sent a pass that Munoz deflected to Diaz, who banged it home.

The Huskies continued to lead 1-0 until the 73rd minute, when Ryan Walter tied the match, assisted by Halberg. Halberg sent a cross into the box which Walter headed it into the net.

Five minutes later, Binghamton took the lead, as Keegan scored, assisted by Halberg. Halberg found Keegan one-on-one with Boyer and he snuck the ball into the left corner.

In the 85th minute, Halberg scored to give the Bearcats a 3-1 lead, assisted by Keegan and Ben Nicholson. Nicholson passed the ball up the middle and Keegan and Halberg did a give-and-go.

The Bearcats completed the scoring in the 87th minute, with Marts Reid-Warren scoring, assisted by Tucker Sandercock. Sandercock sent a cross into the box that Reid-Warren one-timed into the net.

Diaz and Richard Ojeda were named to the All-Tournament Team.

HBU (0-3-0) will compete in the Dayton Marriott Classic from Sept. 9-11. The Huskies play the host Flyers on Sept. 9 at 8 pm CST.
