HOUSTON – San Diego State scored three second-half goals to defeat Houston Baptist, 4-1, Sunday evening at Sorrels Field.

Tanner Fyfe and Mateo Jimenez each had a shot on goal for HBU. Kristopher Tyrpak and Zach Pierce each recorded a shot.

Daniel Boyer made eight saves, while allowing four goals.

Daniel Steres had a two goal, one assist night for the Aztecs. Ata Ozbay and Jordan Ongaro also scored a goal. Jose Altamirano had an assist. John Pegg and Ozbay each recorded a match-high three shots.

Blake Hylen earned the win, making two saves in 76 minutes. Tim Peitsch played the remaining 15 minutes and allowed one goal.

SDSU scored the game's first goal in the 10th minute, as Steres scored his first of the night, assisted by Altamirano on a corner kick.

The teams entered halftime with the score 1-0 SDSU. The Aztecs outshot HBU 6-1 in the half.

The eventual game winner came off the foot of Ozbay, who scored in the 54th minute, assisted by Steres. Steres sent a long pass to the middle of the field and Ozbay kicked a beautiful ball that curved into the right side of the net.

SDSU took control of the match with two goals in a two-minute span, as Steres scored in the 70th minute, followed by a tally by Ongaro in the 72nd minute.

HBU got on the board in the 81st minute on an own goal. Tyrpak sent a cross into the box that hit an Aztec defender. The deflection sent the ball past Peitsch and into the net.

“San Diego State is a great team,” said head coach Steve Jones. “They're athletic and have tons of guys that have gone pro. We settled down after giving up the first goal, but in the second half, we kind of died down. We have one of the toughest schedules in the country with one of the youngest teams. We play two teams next weekend that are just as good as SDSU.

“I'm proud how the guys never quit. They worked hard and we just have to keep pressing forward.”

HBU (0-6-1) will take part in the Husky Soccer Classic, hosted by the University of Washington, from Sept. 23-25. The Huskies will play host Washington on Sept. 23 at 9 pm CST and Portland on Sept. 25 at 1 pm CST.
