Postmatch Interview - Leaverton (video)
HOUSTON – Houston Baptist University hit .301 for the match, while holding Southeastern Louisiana to a .000 hitting percentage as the Huskies swept the Lady Lions, 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-13), in the Husky Classic Friday night at Sharp Gym.
HBU junior outside hitter Heather Leaverton led the Huskies (12-3) with eight kills, six in the third set, and added five digs and three blocks. Freshman outside hitter Jasmine Casey had seven kills, eight digs and a pair of service aces. Senior libero Courtney Whittleman had 11 digs, a career-high eight assists and four aces.
Sophomore middle blocker Caiti Wenger added six errorless kills and four blocks, while senior middle blocker Jolie Graf had five kills and five blocks. Senior rightside hitter Isis Gardner had six kills and a pair of blocks in only two sets, while junior setter Victoria Weatherly had four errorless kills, five digs and 23 assists.
Courtney Donald led Southeastern Louisiana (4-11) with eight kills and three blocks, while Elizabeth Ramee had five kills. Megan McMillin led the Lady Lions with seven digs.
The Huskies outdug the Lady Lions, 42-25 and outblocked them, 11.5-6. HBU recorded eight aces, but were never aced.
HBU got off to a hot start, hitting .483 in the first set with 14 kills and no errors. The Huskies jumped out to a 10-3 lead and scored the last seven points of the set to cruise to a 25-11 win.
The teams were tied at 11 in the second, but the Huskies sided out, then added three-straight points for a 16-12 lead. HBU led by as many as seven and closed out Southeastern Louisiana for a 25-19 decision.
In the third, HBU took a 10-5 lead, but Southeastern Louisiana answered with five-straight points to tie the set. The Huskies came back by scoring six in a row, then outscored the Lady Lions, 9-3, including three kills by Casey, to end the match with a 25-13 victory.
In the first match of the tournament, Southern Mississippi defeated Louisiana Tech, 3-0, then HBU downed Southern Miss, 3-1. In the afternoon match, Louisiana Tech bounced back with a 3-1 win over Southeastern Louisiana.
The tournament concludes Saturday with Southeastern Louisiana facing Southern Miss at 11 a.m., followed by HBU hosting Louisiana Tech at 1 p.m.
