HOUSTON – The Houston Baptist men's soccer team rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to tie visiting Wofford, 1-1 in double overtime, before 347 fans at Sorrels Field Friday evening.
Kristopher Tyrpak led all players with six shots, four on goal.
Tanner Fyfe scored the Huskies' goal on his only shot attempt.
Kyle Herbison earned the assist on the play, as he had two shots, one on target.
Daniel Boyer earned the tie, making three saves in 110 minutes.
Dennis Moore led the Terriers with five shots, two on goal. Turner Almond also scored on his only shot attempt. Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez had three shots, one on goal.
Andrew Drennan made eight saves in 110 minutes.
Wofford scored the match's opening goal nine minutes in, as the Huskies turned the ball over deep in their territory. Almond got the ball and shot it into the net in front of the box.
The two teams entered halftime with Wofford still leading, 1-0. HBU held a slim 7-6 lead in shots and each team was tied 2-2 in corner kicks.
HBU finally got on the board in the 63rd minute, as the Huskies were awarded a corner kick. Herbison took the shot and Fyfe hit it into the back of the net.
Neither team could muster a goal, nor shot in each 10-minute overtime periods.
“I feel we were a bit unlucky tonight,” said head coach
Steve Jones. “We're getting closer and I'm proud of how we played hard and fought hard. The guys stuck with the game plan and never got frustrated. The boys played well and I'm proud of them.”
Marcos Escobar got a red card, so he cannot play in Sunday's match against San Diego State.
The Huskies (0-5-1) host the SDSU Aztecs on Sun., Sept. 18 at 7 pm.
