DAYTON, Ohio – Butler broke a 1-1 tie midway through the second half and HBU missed a penalty kick later in the half, as Houston Baptist lost a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Butler on the final day of the Marriott Classic Sunday afternoon.
Last season, Butler was fifth in the country, losing its only match of the season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Michigan State.
Kevin Suarez started the match and took the loss, allowing two goals and making eight saves in 65 minutes.
Daniel Boyer played the final 25 minutes.
Austin Oldham led Butler with two goals. Jordan Burt, Zach Steinberger and Adam Glanzer each had an assist. Burt had a match-high six shots, while Oldham led the Bulldogs with three shots on goal.
Jon Dawson played the entire match in goal, allowing one goal and making two saves.
Butler scored the match's first goal, just three minutes in, as Oldham scored, assisted by Glanzer and Jordan. Jordan sent a quick pass to Glanzer, who passed it onto Oldham. Oldham snuck the ball past Suarez from 15 yards out.
The Huskies would tie the match six minutes later, as Pierce scored, assisted by Herbison and Tyrpak. Herbison sent a pass from the left sideline to Tyrpak. Tyrpak sent a pass to Pierce in front of the keeper, who knocked it home.
Butler broke the tie in the middle of the second half, as Oldham scored in the 65th minute, assisted by Steinberger. Steinberger sent a pass to the right side, where Oldham was one-on-one with Suarez. He beat the Husky keeper on the far post.
HBU had a golden opportunity to tie the match in the 70th minute, as Bulldog keeper Dawson was given a yellow card. The card resulted in a penalty kick for the Huskies, but Dawson got redemption as he saved Tyrpak's shot, keeping the Bulldogs ahead.
HBU was outshot 19-9 and Butler had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Huskies were whistled for 22 fouls, to Butler's 10.
Pierce and
Richard Ojeda were named to the All-Tournament Team.
HBU (0-5-0) will return home to Sorrels Field to host Wofford on Fri., Sept. 16 and San Diego State on Sun., Sept. 18. Both matches are set for 7 pm starts.
