DALLAS – Houston Christian University lost the opener of a three-match road swing, falling 6-0 to No. 5 ranked SMU on Monday night at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium.
The Huskies saw an SMU offense flying to start the match. The Mustangs peppered the woodwork over the first 35 minutes, putting 16 shots up with half of those on target.
Landon Hickam got the scoring started just over 10 minutes into the contest on an assist from Ryan Clanton-Pimentel. Just 20 minutes later Franco Ocana put one home coming off a rebound off the post, with an assist to Nick Harshaw.
The Ponies finished the first 45 with 19 total shots to just four for the Huskies while earning nine corners.
Harvey Heeps matched his personal save mark by registering seven in the first stanza.
The second half started with much the same pace, and the Mustangs continued the high-octane attack. SMU capitalized just over three minutes in as Alex Salvo put in the third goal for the hosts off assists from Ocana and Harshaw. Harshaw would earn his third assist of the night on a goal by Mukisa Emmanuel just into the 67th minute to put the Mustangs up four.
Aidan Lopez led HCU with three shots, one on goal while Heeps finished with a career-high 10 saves on the evening. The hosts put 18 of their 41 shots on goal and finished with 13 corners. Landon Hickam and Mukisa Emmanuel each had two goals for the Mustangs, now 4-0 on the season.
HCU is now 1-3-0 overall. The Huskies continue their three-match road stretch this weekend when they head to California for a Friday night tilt at Cal State Northridge. Kick-off at Matador Soccer Field is scheduled for 9 pm CT.
