HOUSTON – The HBU women's basketball team hits the road to conclude the home-and-home series with UT-Pan American. Tip-off is set for a 5:30 pm start on Wednesday, Feb. 9.
UTPA leads the all-time series, 9-1, as the Lady Broncs defeated HBU back on Jan. 22 by a score of 76-61 in Sharp Gym. Destini Texada recorded a double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Huskies, while Tia Jackson scored 13. Jamie Spriggs had nine points, seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks and three steals. The Lady Broncs had three players in double figures, led by Donna Jackson who led the team with 18 points and was tied with Re-Shawndra Jackson in rebounds with 10. Jackson scored 12 points, while Bianca Torre scored 13.
HBU (2-20, 0-7 GWC) lost at home to Utah Valley last Saturday, 79-75. Four Huskies finished in double figures, led by a season-high 17 points by Megan Green. Joselyn Pugh scored a career-high 14 points and led the team with a career-tying nine rebounds. Tia Jackson scored 12 while Texada had 10. Sammie Jensen recorded a double-double of 23 points and 15 rebounds for the Wolverines. Jenna Johnson scored 17 while Abbie Beutler recorded 16. Beutler dished out a game-high nine assists.
The Huskies are ranked seventh in the Great West Conference in scoring offense (51.8 ppg) and sixth in scoring defense (78.1 ppg). HBU is fourth in rebounding offense (35.6 rpg) and sixth in rebounding defense (42.6 rpg). The Huskies are ranked second in defensive rebounds, grabbing an average of 25.1 a game.
Texada is tied for ninth in the conference in scoring, averaging 12.4 ppg. Spriggs is 15th, averaging 9.5 ppg, Jackson is 22nd with an average of 7.5 ppg and Green is 26th, averaging 6.8 ppg.
Texada is third in rebounding, averaging 8.2 boards a game. Ernesta Griciunaite and Spriggs are tied for 16th, averaging 4.6 rpg.
A 53 percent field-goal percentage ranks Texada third in the conference, as Spriggs is fifth, shooting 51 percent of her shots.
Jackson is tied for fourth in assists, averaging 3.7 helpers a game and is 12th in free-throw percentage, hitting 66 percent of her shots. Green is sixth in the conference, averaging 1.8 three-point field goals per game.
UT-Pan American (9-16, 1-6 GWC) lost its fourth-straight game, an 86-79 setback to Chicago State on Saturday. The Lady Broncs haven't won since defeating HBU in Sharp Gym in their only conference victory.
Five Lady Broncs finished in double-figures against CSU, led by Torre with 19 points. She was just 3-for-11 shooting, but was a perfect 13-for-13 at the free-throw line. Ce'Monay Newell and D. Jackson each scored 13 points, while R. Jackson scored 12 and Adanna Opara scored 11. Opara's nine rebounds were a game high. Courtney Waldon led the Cougars with 26 points, followed closely by Tressa Beckel with 21.Beckel's eight rebounds led the team.
UTPA is second in the conference in scoring offense (67.1 ppg) but is last in scoring defense (79.0 ppg). The Lady Broncs are fifth in rebounding offense (35.4 rpg) but last in rebounding defense (45.0 rpg). They are third in three-point field goal percentage, hitting 37 percent of their shots. The Lady Broncs average 13.7 assists a game, good for third place in the conference. UTPA leads the league in three-point field goals made, averaging 7.6 threes per contest.
Torre is tied for second in the conference in scoring, averaging 16.8 ppg. Newell is ranked sixth, averaging 15.3 ppg while D. Jackson and Oparra are tied for 17th place, averaging 7.9 ppg.
Oparra is tied for sixth in rebounding, averaging 6.8 boards a contest, while D. Jackson is tied for 11th, averaging 5.8 rpg. She is ranked second in field-goal percentage, nailing 55 percent of her shots.
Erin Lewis leads the conference in assists, averaging 6.4 helpers a game, while Torre is eighth, with 3.3 apg. Torre is tied for fifth in steals, averaging 1.8 per contest.
The Huskies and Lady Broncs have faced eight common opponents: Texas Southern, Stephen F. Austin State, Sam Houston State, NJIT, Chicago State, North Dakota, South Dakota and Utah Valley. HBU is 1-8 and UTPA is 2-7. Both the Huskies and Lady Broncs defeated Sam Houston State while UTPA's other win came against Texas Southern.
