ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Houston Baptist ran into a hot-shooting George Washington club, falling to the Colonials on the final day of the Navy Classic, 80-44, on Sat., Dec. 3.
Shanice Steenholdt led HBU (0-9) with 18 points and seven rebounds. She also recorded one assist, two blocks and two steals and for her efforts in the two games, was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Brittany Barton came off the bench to score seven points, while
Maisie Elston scored a career-high six points.
George Washington (5-3) played as near a perfect game as one could play, as the Colonials shot 50 percent from the floor (a season-high), 50 percent from the three-point line, 83 percent from the free throw line and converted a season-low 12 turnovers. GW had three players in double figures, led by Tiana Myers with 15 points, as she was 5-of-6 from the floor and 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Tara Booker and Chakecia Miller each scored 10. Brooke Wilson grabbed a game high 12 rebounds.
GW scored seven of the first nine points to start the game. Wilson scored five of those points, on a layup and a three. Entering the first media timeout of the game, GW had built a comfortable 16-6 lead, going 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. In fact, the Colonials hit their first five 3-pointers before missing.
GW increased its lead to 13, 19-6, before the Huskies got a jumper by
Emily Jenkins. Those were the last points for HBU until 9:36 – a span of five minutes – as GW went on a 9-0 run to lead 31-8. A three-pointer by
Olivia Madison stopped the run at the 9:36-mark of the opening half.
Midway through the first half, GW had hit 67 percent of its shots, and a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc.
Following a three by Myers that gave GW a 36-17 lead with seven minutes remaining, HBU used a 5-0 run, on a jumper by Steenholdt and a three by Elston, as the Huskies trailed the Colonials, 36-18.
GW scored four straight to lead by 22, 40-18, before HBU closed out the first half on a 5-2 run to trail GW at the half, 42-23.
Steenholdt led all scorers at the half with 12 points, while tying with
Devyn Weymouth with a team-high four rebounds. Booker and Myers led GW at the half with 10 points apiece, as Booker was held scoreless in the second half.
The Huskies scored the first points in the second half, on a jumper by Jenkins, but GW scored four straight to build a 46-25 advantage two-and-a-half minutes into the second half.
Following a Steenholdt jumper that brought the Huskies within 46-27, the Colonials went on a 19-2 run – including 10 straight – to build a 56-27 lead with 12:52 left.
A layup by Barton slowed the Colonials, but barely, as GW continued to score the next nine points for its largest lead thus far of the night, at 65-29, prompting the Huskies to take a timeout.
HBU scored six straight on back-to-back threes by Weymouth and Barton, as HBU trailed GW 67-37 with 6:47 remaining in the game.
A jumper by Miller at the 1:15-mark gave the Colonials their largest lead of the night, at 80-42. The Huskies scored the final points in the game on a layup by Barton with 28 seconds left.
HBU will conclude its road trip at the University of Houston on Sat., Dec. 10 at 2 pm from Hofheinz Pavilion.
