SAN MARCOS, Texas –
Shanice Steenholdt recorded game highs of 26 points and 12 rebounds, but Houston Baptist found itself down 20 points at halftime and fell to host Texas State, 86-61, Wednesday evening from Strahan Coliseum.
Steenholdt recorded her seventh double-double of the season to lead HBU (0-13).
Emily Jenkins set new personal bests with eight points and four blocks.
Maisie Elston and
Brittany Barton combined for 19 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals.
The Huskies ran into a Ford – Diamond Ford, that is – as the Southland Conference leading scorer led Texas State (7-4) with 25 points – 18 of those coming in the second half. Demi Clinch came off the bench to score 14, while Verinus Kalu had 11 and Ashley Ezeh scored 10. Ezeh and Kalu led the Bobcats with eight rebounds each.
Texas State scored the game's first four points, before the Huskies cut the deficit to one on a Steenholdt three-pointer. With the score 4-3, the Bobcats went on a 14-2 run to take a 21-5 lead with 11 minutes left in the opening half. An Elston three halted the run, as the Huskies scored six unanswered to trail the Bobcats, 23-11, with 9:11 left in the half.
Texas State then used another long run – a 12-2 run – to lead the Huskies by 20, 33-13, with four-and-a-half remaining in the first half.
The Huskies cut it to 17, on a three by Elston, but Texas State closed out the opening half scoring 17 of the final 13 points of the opening half to lead the Huskies, 44-24, at the break.
Steenholdt had been held to just four points for much of the first half, before she got on a roll late, scoring the Huskies' final five points of the first half. She led the Huskies with nine points, while Elston and Jenkins scored six each.
Devyn Weymouth grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Clinch led the Bobcats with nine points, while Kalu and Clinch each grabbed seven boards.
Texas State jumped on Husky turnovers to start the second half to build a big lead. Seven of the Huskies' first 12 possessions were turnovers, resulting in 11 Bobcat points, as Texas State led the Huskies, 64-34, with 14 minutes left in regulation.
Another Husky turnover resulted in a three by Clinch to give the Bobcats their largest lead of the game, 71-34, with 11:32 left in the game.
The Huskies battled until the final buzzer, outscoring Texas State 27-14 to end the game and bring the score to 86-61.
HBU will conclude the road trip against UT-Arlington on Dec. 31 at 1 pm.
