HOUSTON – Hot-shooting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi built a comfortable 20-point halftime lead and never looked back, as Houston Baptist fell to the visiting Islanders, 65-45, on the final day of the Husky Classic Saturday evening at Sharp Gym.
Shanice Steenholdt earned her second collegiate double-double for HBU (0-6), as she scored 20 points and set a new career high with 15 rebounds.
Devyn Weymouth came one point short of her career high in points, finishing tonight's game with 15. She also finished second behind Steenholdt with seven rebounds. The duo combined for 35 of the team's 45 points and shot a combined 44 percent from the floor.
Myeisha Myles led Corpus Christi (2-4) with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Marquesha Anderson came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points. Myles led the Islanders in both offensive and defensive rebounds – six apiece – while Zoey Vega-Vega had six boards, five on the offensive end. Taryn Gregory had a game-high four assists.
HBU scored the game's opening basket – a jumper by
Joselyn Pugh – but Corpus Christi went on a 13-0 run to take a 13-2 lead with 13:40 remaining in the first half. Steenholdt picked up two quick fouls and the Huskies were forced to bench her for most of the first half, as she came out of the game with the Islanders leading 7-2.
Following a 30-second timeout for the Huskies, trailing 13-2, the Huskies snapped the dry spell with a three-pointer by Weymouth at the 13:06-mark.
Anderson then took over for the Islanders, hitting three 3-pointers in a span of a minute, to give the visitors a 16-point lead, 24-8, with 9:50 left in the first half.
HBU went on a 7-4 run to cut the deficit to 11, 28-15, with six minutes remaining, as Steenholdt had two buckets and
Tayler Jefferson hit a three. But the Islanders scored the next six points, and eight of nine, to take their largest lead of the half, at 36-16, with three minutes remaining. Jessica Jammer had four points, a rebound and an assist in that span.
Two jumpers by Steenholdt and two free throws by Weymouth brought the Huskies back to within 17, 39-22, but Corpus Christi ended the half on a 5-0 run to lead the Huskies, 44-22. Alisa Roberts hit a trey and Anderson hit two free throws.
Steenholdt led the Huskies in the opening 20 minutes with nine points and six boards. Weymouth scored eight points and grabbed three rebounds, along with one assist and one steal. Anderson scored 11 of her 14 points in the first half, as she led all scorers. Myles had 10 rebounds in the opening half.
The Islanders got the ball to start the second half, but Steenholdt immediately stole it, which resulted in a quick two points for her 30 seconds into the second half.
Each team answered baskets, as the largest lead for the Islanders was 26 and the Huskies brought it to within 21, 53-32, midway through the second half, as the Huskies went on a small 6-1 run in that span. Four of the six points came off free throws.
Following a media timeout with 11 minutes remaining, Corpus Christi scored the next seven points of the game to take a 62-32 lead with six-and-a-half remaining in the game. A Weymouth layup stopped the Islander run and resulted in Steenholdt hitting one of two free throws, as the Huskies were down 62-35.
The final points in the game were mostly free throws, with HBU making 6-of-8 and Corpus Christi making 1-of-2. Steenholdt scored six of the Huskies' final 10 points to end the game.
HBU will conclude its home stand against Stephen F. Austin on Tues., Nov. 29 at 7 pm from Sharp Gym.
