HOUSTON – The Houston Baptist Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) recently completed a blanket drive to help those in the local area in need. SAAC collected 51 blankets in three weeks.

Sofia Perez, a senior athletic training major who is the SAAC representative for the athletic training department, wanted to do something for the needy in the local area and didn't have to look very far to decide what she wanted to do.

“My mom works at the Second Mile Mission Center, a non-profit Christian organization that helps the less-fortunate,” said Perez. “They help those in need with food, finding jobs, school and financial assistance. They also counsel and help the needy with physical and spiritual healing.”

All blankets donated will go to Second Mile, which is located in nearby Stafford. But the drive is not over. “We want to challenge the HBU staff to match the total to push it above 100,” said SAAC liaison, David Crane.

This is the second big project SAAC has done this year, as the group held a Wildfire Relief Effort back in September.

Perez was pleased with the results. “It's good because 51 people will not have to suffer with the cold.”
