HOUSTON – The offense erupted for Houston Baptist Saturday evening, as the Huskies scored three times and held visiting NJIT to just two shots on goal, as the Huskies defeated the Highlanders, 3-0, at Sorrels Field.

Marcos Escobar, Tanner Fyfe and Zach Pierce each scored for the Huskies. Fyfe, Mark Gendi, Kristopher Tyrpak and Richard Ojeda each recorded an assist. Escobar had a match-high four shots, with his only shot on goal resulting in his first collegiate marker.

Reigning Atlantic Soccer Conference Rookie of the Week, Kevin Suarez, earned his first collegiate win and second-consecutive shutout, making two saves.

Matija Blazic and Kwesi Alleyne each had a shot on goal for the Highlanders. Blazic and Franco Gamero led NJIT with two shots attempted.

Reigning ASC Goalkeeper of the Week, Lars Maalen-Johansen, took the loss, making two saves and allowing three goals.

The Huskies wasted little time in taking the lead, as Escobar scored in the 10th minute, assisted by Fyfe and Gendi. Gendi sent a pass to the right side to Fyfe, who sent a centering pass to Escobar, who snuck the ball in the lower-left corner.

The two teams entered halftime with HBU leading, 1-0. The Huskies outshot the Highlanders, 7-3, in the opening half.

It remained that way until the 78th minute, when Fyfe scored, assisted by Tyrpak. Tyrpak sent a pass to the left side, and Fyfe sent a rocket inside the right post.

The Huskies put the dagger in, as Pierce scored in the 89th minute, assisted by Ojeda. Ojeda sent a beautiful pass up the middle and Pierce used his speed to get past the defender and on a breakaway. He jumped over Maalen-Johansen, who tried to stop the ball, but Pierce got it back and shot it into an open net.

HBU and NJIT are tied for second place in the ASC standings, each with a 1-1-0 conference record. Adelphi is in first place with a perfect 3-0-0 mark.

HBU will host Oral Roberts on Mon., Oct. 17, on “Senior Night.” First kick is set for a 7 pm start.
