HOUSTON - The 2010 Houston Baptist volleyball team made its public debut, sweeping the HBU Alumni squad, 4-0 (25-15, 25-12, 28-26, 25-20), Sunday afternoon at Sharp Gym.
Sophomore outside hitter Heather Leaverton led the Huskies with 13 kills to go along with six digs, while junior right-side hitter Isis Gardner, a transfer from North Carolina State, added 10 kills and eight digs.
Senior middle blocker Sarah Hazlewood had eight kills without an error, and junior libero Courtney Whittleman had 18 digs to lead HBU defensively. Sophomore setter Victoria Weatherly, a transfer from Winona State, was solid all-around with 46 assists, three kills, six digs, three service aces and a pair of blocks.
Twenty-eight former players were in attendance, including head coach Kaddie Mahoney Platt, assistant coach Nicole Westerterp and three of last year's seniors -- Natalie Magat, Samantha Wilson and Lize Hicks. Also on hand were Shannon Pritchard McInnis (1987-91), Alicia Shelby Adams (1988-91), Heather Bowles Vogel (1996-2000), Jamie Martin Lumsden (1996-2000), Amy Boiteaux Cataline (1998-2002), Jamie Lister (2002-05), Karla Foots Beek (1992-96), Amber Martin Cabell (2000-05), Sarah Emmer Maas (2002-04), Laura Jones Kubena (1987-90), Kathy Brown Chessher (1986-90), Breanne Brown Hause (2001-02), Rachel Dinkins (1999-2001), Jaime Brown Bradley (1999-2001), Katrina English (2001-04), Elinor Smith (2000-05), Olivia Grant Ober (1994-97), Helen Elele Ekadeli (2001-02), Milica Vasiljevic (2005-08), Ivana Djordjevic (2006-08), Monica Simiyu (2006-10), Myra Reyes (1991-93) and Bryce Zimmerman (2006-08).
HBU has one more exhibition remaining, as the Huskies will divide up for the Blue & Orange intrasquad game Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Sharp Gym. The Huskies open the 2010 regular season with four matches at the Florida Gulf Coast University Homewood Suites Volleyball Classic Aug. 27-28 in Ft. Myers, Fla.
