OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - Houston Baptist junior centerfielder Paul Prestera went 5-for-6 with two doubles and four runs scored, to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, and senior shortstop Zeke Zikeli went 5-for-7, drove in three and scored two as the Huskies pounded out 26 hits in an 18-3 rout of New York Tech in the opener of their Great West Conference series Friday afternoon at President's Field.
Sophomore third baseman Robbie Buller homered twice and drove in four runs for HBU (14-16, 4-1 GWC), while freshmen outfielders Jake Gonzalez and Blake Doerr also went deep. Junior first baseman Chase Hernandez was 3-for-5, while senior catcher Johnathon Moore and junior designated hitter Beau Warren had two hits each.
Brian Smith, Effrey Valdez and Greg Gilroy had three hits each for New York Tech (12-13, 4-1), while Sebastian Grazziani homered and drove in three.
Sophomore righthander Dalton Schafer (5-3) picked up the win, allowing one run on eight hits and striking out five in seven innings, while Preston Wasmund (3-1) took the loss for New York Tech, giving up eight runs, seven earned, on 12 hits in 4 2/3 innings.
The series continues with a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m. CDT, followed by the single-game finale Sunday at noon.
