HBU Holds on to Defeat SHSU, 51-48

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The HBU women's basketball team returned to action and won its second-straight game, a 51-48 victory over Sam Houston State Saturday afternoon at Johnson Coliseum.
SHSU led HBU midway through the first half, 15-10. Sequeena Thomas had 10 of the Bearkats' points. The Huskies, down 19-12, went on a 9-0 run to lead SHSU, 21-19, with 5:50 left in the first half.
The Huskies continued the run and led SHSU, 28-24, at the break. After scoring 10 of SHSU's first 15 points, Thomas was shut out the remainder of the half, but her 10 points was still a half-high. She was tied for the team-high with three rebounds with Nyha Carter and Jaleesa Thomas.
Brittany Barton led the Huskies with eight points while Destini Texada had a half-high seven rebounds. HBU shot 45 percent compared to SHSU's 26 percent.
Midway through the second half, the Bearkats used a little run to lead the Huskies, 36-34. The rest of the game continued the same way, the Huskies battling back but SHSU kept its lead. A Barton three-pointer cut the Bearkat lead to 47-44 with just over four minutes left in regulation.
A Texada basket and ensuing free throw gave the Huskies a two-point lead with one minute remaining. That proved to be the game winner as the Huskies held on for a 51-48 win.
Tia Jackson scored a team-high 12 points, while Texada scored 10 and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds. Thomas led all scorers with 16 points and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.
HBU (2-7) will face Texas Southern at TSU on Sunday at 5 pm.
