Volleyball Falls to Utah Valley, 3-1

Sophomore Heather Leaverton led the Huskies with 14 kills and 14 digs at Utah Valley Thursday.

OREM, Utah – Houston Baptist University sophomore outside hitter Heather Leaverton had 14 kills and 14 digs for her eighth double-double of the season, but the Huskies couldn't overcome a slow start in a 3-1 (12-25, 14-25, 25-22, 18-25) loss to Utah Valley in Great West Conference volleyball Thursday night at the Shurian Family Activity Center.

 

Junior right-side hitter Isis Gardner added nine kills, four digs and three blocks for the Huskies (16-11, 6-4 GWC). Senior outside hitter Paige Jenkins had seven kills and six digs, while senior middle blocker Sarah Hazlewood posted four kills, four digs and four blocks. Sophomore setter Victoria Weatherly had 32 assists, six digs and three blocks, and junior libero Courtney Whittleman had 13 digs.

 

Kayli Doxey led Utah Valley (17-10, 6-3) with a match-high 19 kills and had 12 digs, while Jaicee Kuresa had 10 kills and four blocks. Kathleen Stevens led the Wolverines defensively with 17 digs.

 

Utah Valley hit .306 for the match, while holding HBU to .121. The Wolverines outdug the Huskies, 55-52.

 

HBU returns to action when it hosts North Dakota Nov. 11, followed by the season finale against South Dakota Nov. 13 at Sharp Gym.
