HOUSTON – Houston Baptist University junior right-side hitter Isis Gardner hit .469 with 17 kills and five blocks as the Huskies outblocked and outserved South Dakota to 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-19) victory in the Great West Conference volleyball regular-season finale Saturday afternoon at Sharp Gym.
On Senior Day, outside hitter Paige Jenkins added nine kills and six digs in her final home match as a Husky. HBU's middle blockers gave the Huskies a huge advantage as junior Jolie Graf had seven kills and five blocks, five service aces and four digs, while senior Sarah Hazlewood had four kills and six blocks.
Sophomore setter Victoria Weatherly notched a double-double with 38 assists and 11 for HBU (17-12, 7-5 GWC), while sophomore outside hitter Heather Leaverton had five kills and 17 digs. Junior libero Courtney Whittleman led the Huskies defensively with 21 digs. Also playing in their final home match were defensive specialist Cami Stastny, who had eight digs, and outside hitter Barbara Silva.
Kristin Kritenbrink led South Dakota (12-18, 8-4) with 15 kills and 16 digs, while Kim Bulaga also had a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Amber Aschoff added 10 kills. Tori Kroll had 41 assists and 12 digs, while Carol Logato led the Coyotes' defensive effort with 26 digs.
HBU hit .165 for the match, while holding South Dakota to .106. The Coyotes outdug the Huskies, 82-71, but the Huskies outblocked the Coyotes, 11.0-5.5. HBU also had 10 aces, while South Dakota only had one.
The Huskies will be the No. 4 seed at the Great West Conference Tournament next weekend in Chicago. HBU will face fifth-seeded Texas-Pan American Friday.
