HOUSTON - The HBU women's basketball team begins its 2010-11 season with a Friday night match-up against TCU. Tip off is set for a 5:30 pm start.
HBU returns four starters and 10 letterwinners from a young team a season ago.
Two Huskies ended the season nearly averaging double-digit points, as Jamie Spriggs led the squad with 9.9 ppg followed by Taniqua Hollis with 9.8.
Destini Texada, who led the team with 5.9 rebounds per game, was named to the Great West Second Team All-Conference, while she and Hollis were named to the GWC All-Newcomer Team. Raquel Jones, who led the Huskies in three-pointers made and three-point percentage, earned GWC Honorable Mention honors.
TCU comes into the 2010-11 campaign after an '09-10 season where the Lady Frogs went 22-9, finished first in the Mountain West Conference and lost by one point against Dayton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Knoxville, Tenn. TCU was undefeated (15-0) at home last season.
The Lady Frogs return eight letterwinners and four starters from a year ago, including Helena Sverrisdottir, who was second on the team in points per game with 13.6 and is one of 50 Division I women's basketball players on the Naismith Trophy Watch List entering this season. TCU also returns last season's leading scorer, Emily Carter, who averaged 14.4 points a game.
