Abby Gargus is in her first year as student assistant after her playing career was cut short due to injury following her freshman season at HBU in 2017. She appeared in 18 matches, including 13 starts, and played 63 sets. Gargus ranked sixth in the Southland Conference with 9.28 assists per set and also averaged 0.95 kills, 0.32 aces and 2.10 digs per set.

A native of Prosper, Texas, Gargus was a standout at Prosper High School, where she was the 12th-ranked setter in the state according to MaxPreps. As a senior, her team went 40-8 overall and undefeated in district play at 14-0, as she averaged 11.4 assists, 1.4 kills and 3.0 digs per set. Gargus was named to the 2016 Under Armour All-American Watch List, was on the Allen ISD and PSA Circle of Champions All-Tournament Teams and was named to the Top 150 Senior Aces. She was a two-time all-district right side in 2014 and 2015 and helped lead her team to the 5A regional finals in 2014 and the 4A state finals in 2013.

Also outstanding off the court, Gargus earned academic all-district honors as a sophomore, junior and senior. She played club volleyball for Lonestar, with her 15s team qualifying for the Open Division Junior Nationals, her 16s team finishing 13th and her 17s team finishing in the Top 20. She played her last club season for Arsenal 18 Gold under the direction of Skip Freeman.Â
