2016-17 (Redshirt Junior): Named to NABC Honors Court…appeared in 15 games as a junior, averaging 8.3 minute per game…averaged 2.2 points per game…scored a season-high seven points at Marquette (11/26)…finished with 14 rebounds, five steals and five assists.

2015-16 (Redshirt Sophomore): Gates appeared in three games, before missing the remainder of the season and earning a medical redshirt…scored 10 points, pulled down two rebounds, had one assists and a steal in 38 minutes…scored eight points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field, 1-of-3 from 3-point range and 1-of-2 from the free-throw line in 19 minutes against Arlington Baptist (12/12)…played nine minutes against UC Riverside (12/15) and 10 at Arizona State (12/19).
 
Prior to HBU: Spent freshman season and the first half of sophomore season at Furman…appeared in seven games with one start in 2014-15, averaging 2.4 points and totaling six assists and four rebounds in 13.0 minutes per game…as a freshman, was one of four players to appear in all 30 games for the Paladins, logging 26.7 minutes per game and averaging 8.2 points, 2.3 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game, while shooting 45.8 percent from the field, including 41.9 percent from behind the arc…named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team.

High School: Began prep career at St. Joseph's in Chicago, but played senior season at Clemens High School in the San Antonio area for coach Clifton Ellis and averaged 24 points, six rebounds and three assists per game. 

Personal: Born March 28, 1995, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin…son of William Gates Sr. and Catherine Gates…father, William Sr., was featured in the critically acclaimed 1994 documentary Hoop Dreams…has one older sister, Alicia, and two younger brothers, Jalon and Marques…brother, Jalon, is a sophomore on the HBU basketball team…majoring in journalism and mass communication.
