HOUSTON – After a series of tough matchups in various tournaments this season, the HCU volleyball squad is preparing to defend home court twice this weekend to begin Southland Conference play.
On Thursday, Sep. 24, the Huskies welcome the Northwestern State Demons for the opening SLC match at 6:30 pm. The Demons currently hold an 8-7 record, with notable wins that include a 3-0 victory against Louisiana Tech and a 3-1 win over Jackson State. The Northwestern State squad is led by freshman Olivia Nzioki, who walks into the matchup with 146 kills, 39 blocks, and 6 digs this season.
On Saturday, Sep. 26, HCU plays host to the East Texas A&M Lions for an early 1 pm matchup. East Texas A&M currently has a record of 6-7, including a 3-1 win versus a strong St. John's team. The Lions are led by standout senior Ariana Brown, who has 164 kills, 114 digs, and 16 blocks this season.
The HCU Huskies go into SLC play with a 2-10 record, and are led by junior
Katy Barger, with 132 kills and 140.5 total points, and newcomer
Enisilina Savelio, who has added 415 assists, 115 digs, and 14 blocks this season.
After this weekend's matchups, the Huskies hit the road for four straight matches, the first at Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Oct. 1.
