Houston Christian University heads to the Sooner State for the final non-conference tilt of the season on Saturday night, facing off with a familiar old foe in Oral Roberts University. Kick-off at the Case Soccer Complex in Tulsa is slated for 7 pm.
HCU is now 2-4-1 on the season under Head Coach
Ryan Pratt, in his 10th season at the helm. The Huskies lost their most recent outing, a 3-1 decision that saw
Ryan Okerayi score just over two minutes into the contest before FGCU reeled off three unanswered for the win.
Through seven matches, the Huskies are still searching to find their stride on offense.
Callum Niven and
Ryan Okerayi lead the club with two goals apiece while
Clarenns Sainrimat has the other scores for HCU. Okerayi's now has a 75th minute game-winner from the spot in the 1-0 win over UMass Lowell as well as his second-fastest ever goal, the Huskies lone tally coming just 2:09 into the loss against FGCU on Wednesday night.
The defense, beleaguered by injuries, has continued to fight through the tough early schedule, which has shown to be an offensive gauntlet of sorts.
Harvey Heeps has been solid in his debut season in the pipes after taking over from OVC Goalkeeper of the Year
Alex Aitken. He has 31 saves over the first seven matches, including a career-high nine against both then No. 5 SMU and Grand Canyon last Monday.
The Huskies are coming off a second straight runner-up finish in the Ohio Valley Conference. HCU went 11-5-3 overall and advanced to the OVC title match where it fell at Lindenwood to the Lions in a penalty kick shootout. It was the most victories in a single season since the 1990 team won 14 and are now 10-5-5 in league play over the past two seasons.
HCU and Oral Roberts continue their long-standing rivalry when the two clash at Case Soccer Complex in Tulsa, Oklahoma Saturday night.
This will be the 17th all-time meeting between the two clubs, with the series squared solidly at 6-6-4. HCU won the most recent meeting, a 3-1 decision in Houston last September 7 behind goals from
Ryan Okerayi,
Hans Leza and
Ian Belong. The win for the Huskies was the first since 2013, when they took two meetings with the Golden Eagles.
Oral Roberts is led by Ryan Bush, now in his 14th season at the helm in Tulsa. The Golden Eagles are are 2-3-2 on the season following a 2-0 win at home on Tuesday over UTRGV highlighted by goals from Lazarus Ocira and Emre Aydin.
Roman Hemphill, a 5'7 junior forward, leds ORU with five points on a goal and team-high three assists. Aydin, a 5'11 sophomore midfielder, is one of three players with four points, and leads the club with two assists.
Manning the posts is 6'2 redshirt freshman Cameron Parma. He has started all seven matches and allowed just seven goals while making 29 stops against 103 total shots.
The match with ORU on Saturday ends the non-conference slate for HCU. The Huskies will take a week before jumping into Ohio Valley Conference action with a "White Out" rivalry matchup on Fondren Road against University of the Incarnate Word next Saturday, September 26.
