HOUSTON – The women's volleyball team closed out the Molly Howard-Gerwig Memorial Tournament with a 3-0 win over Bethune-Cookman University at Sharp Gym on Saturday. After two losses on Friday, the Huskies came back with a dominant, well-rounded performance.
HCU jumped out to an early lead behind strong serving and aggressive attacks.
Hannah Redrow scored early kills, while
Joya Euhus and
Allana Archie added key points to keep the Huskies ahead.
Bianca Byerly delivered two service aces late in the set, helping HCU break open a close game. The team capitalized on Bethune-Cookman errors and tight blocking from Kaleigh Williams and Mecca Freeman, finishing the first set 25-19.
Peyton Fadal's 36 assists kept the offense flowing, while
Anna Melgren led the defense with 13 digs, setting the tone for a disciplined performance.
The Huskies continued their momentum in the second set, using a mix of strategic serves and well-placed attacks. Redrow and Archie consistently found open spots on the court, while Euhus added another nine kills. HCU forced Bethune-Cookman into multiple attack errors, and service aces from Fadal and Archie extended the Huskies' lead. Defensive stops by Melgren and Byerly allowed HCU to transition quickly into offense, maintaining control throughout. HCU closed out the set 25-17, showing strong communication and execution at the net.
HCU maintained their dominance in the third set, quickly building a lead with aggressive serving and precise hitting. Archie and Redrow continued to score consistently, while Euhus contributed key blocks and kills. Bethune-Cookman struggled to find offensive rhythm, committing several errors under HCU pressure. Byerly and Fadal kept the offense coordinated, and defensive plays from Williams and Melgren limited scoring opportunities for the visitors. HCU closed out the match 25-18, completing a clean sweep and earning their first win of the season.
With the win, HCU improves to 1-5 overall and will travel to face Texas Southern on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m. at the H&PE Arena. The Huskies hope to carry their balanced offensive attack and strong serving into their next matchup.
