HOUSTON – The HCU women's volleyball team is set to host the annual Molly Howard-Gerwig Memorial Tournament this weekend at Sharp Gym, marking the Huskies' first home matches of the 2025 season.
The tournament opens Friday morning when HCU faces St. Thomas (MN) at 10 a.m., followed by a primetime matchup against Southern Miss at 6:30 p.m. The Huskies will close out the weekend on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Bethune-Cookman.
HCU enters the tournament after competing at the Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, where the team faced a challenging slate against Northern Arizona, Manhattan, and New Mexico. Despite three setbacks, the Huskies highlighted several standout performances.
Allana Archie leads the offense with 28 kills and nine blocks, while
Madison Hess posted 69 assists and added 22 digs.
Bianca Byerly anchors the defense with 34 digs, and
Savanna Stevens paced the team from the service line with four aces.
St. Thomas (MN) arrives in Houston after opening its season at the Golden Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis. The Tommies dropped three straight matches, falling in a tight five-set battle with Ball State before being swept by Cal Poly and then dropping a 3-1 decision to No. 11 Minnesota.
Southern Miss comes into the tournament with momentum after posting a 2-1 record at the Stetson Hatters Invitational. The Golden Eagles earned sweeps over Lamar and host Stetson, with their lone setback coming against Northern Illinois in four sets.
Bethune-Cookman is also entering the weekend on a positive note after competing in the Aggie/Phoenix Invitational. The Wildcats opened with a loss to North Carolina A&T but bounced back with victories over Coppin State and Elon to finish the event 2-1.
Following the tournament, the Huskies will remain in Houston to take on Texas Southern on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at H&PE Arena.
