FORT MYERS, Florida – Houston Christian University had its three-match winning streak snapped in a 2-0 defeat to Florida Gulf Coast University on Sunday night at Pickering Field. The loss comes in the first match of a five-match stretch away from home for the Huskies.
The Eagles put two scores on the board in the first half and made them stand up with a strong defensive effort that kept the Huskies off the board for just the second time this season. HCU once again put double-digits shots up, but only managed five of those on target, while the hosts were very efficient on the offensive end, putting nine of their 12 shots between the pipes.
Edson Murguia scored in the 12th minute for the game-winner, a goal to the bottom right that put the Eagles ahead for good. Caio Oliveira doubled the FGCU (4-2-1) lead in the 39th minute with a blast to the top left corner
Alex Aitken had a season-high seven saves for the Huskies while allowing the two goals.
HCU is now 4-2-0 on the season. The Huskies will be in action again on Wednesday night when they travel down to the valley to take on rival UTRGV in the second tilt of the month-long five-match road swing. Kick-off in Edinburg for that mid-week contest is slated for 6:30 pm.
