VB: HCU heads south Saturday to face co-leader UTRGV in pivotal SLC matchup

Huskies continue road stretch in Edinburg with two regular-season dates remaining before the Southland Championship


CORPUS CHRISTI, Tx. – The volleyball team travels to Corpus Christi on Thursday night to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-15, 5-7) at 6:30 p.m. inside the Dugan Wellness Center.


EDINBURG, Tx. — The volleyball team continues its Southland road swing on Saturday at 12 p.m., visiting UT Rio Grande Valley for the season's second meeting. HCU enters the weekend 12-14 overall and 7-6 in conference play, while UTRGV sits tied for first in the league standings at 17-7 (12-1 SLC).

HCU fell 1–3 on Thursday night at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and will now look to respond against one of the conference's most efficient offensive teams. The Huskies' first matchup this season with the Vaqueros came October 11 at Sharp Gym, where HCU dropped a 1–3 decision.

Entering Saturday, HCU is averaging 13.0 kills per set and 11.8 assists per set, led by 261 kills from Allana Archie and 695 assists from Peyton Fadal. Bianca Byerly continues to pace the Huskies' back row with 311 digs and has also added a team-high 31 aces.

UTRGV carries an 11-match win streak into the weekend after defeating UIW, 3–1, on Thursday's Senior Night in Edinburg. The Vaqueros are hitting .270 on the year, top-two in the conference, and are averaging 1.7 aces per set. Dimitra Nanou leads the attack with 252 kills, while Isabella Costantini directs the offense with 908 assists and has produced a league-leading 49 aces.

Saturday marks one of HCU's final two regular-season contests before the Southland Conference Championship Nov. 20-23 in Commerce. Following this trip, the Huskies will see UIW twice on November 12 on the road and Novembember 15 in Houston to close the schedule.
