HOUSTON – The HCU football team will close out the 2025 season this Saturday at home at Husky Field for Military Appreciation Day and Senior Day, taking on UIW at 2:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Nicholas Pietrzycki and Jackson Cochran on the call while Luke Mauro provides the radio play-by-play call on Patriot Talk 920 AM.
HCU (2-9, 1-6 SLC) is coming off a hard-luck loss at East Texas A&M that saw a late rally fall just short. The two teams traded scores in the first half but a pair of missed PAT opportunities left the Huskies trailing the Lions, 14-12, at the half. ETAMU pushed its lead to 30-12 early in the fourth quarter but the Huskies fought back, scoring three touchdowns in the final 10 minutes of the game to get within five before running out of time when an onside kick attempt in the final minute was recovered by the hosts.
Redshirt freshman
Xai'Shaun Edwards, one of 22 FCS freshmen named to the 2025 Jerry Rice Award Watch List, rushed for 95 yards on Saturday to bring his single-season record total to 979. He stands just 21 rushing yards away from becoming the program's first-ever 1,000-yard rusher. The League City, Texas native ranks 14
th nationally in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns (12) while his 118.09 all-purpose yards per game is 17
th among all FCS players.
Senior quarterback
Maddox Kopp had a strong showing last weekend, finishing with 97 rushing yards on 17 carries while completing 15-of-32 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns without an interception.
Saturday will mark the end of senior
Rodney Dansby's impressive career as a Husky with the linebacker ranking second in program history with 433 career tackles, just 34 shy of record holder Garrett Dolan.
UIW (4-7, 2-5 SLC) has had an up-and-down season with two of its four wins coming against ranked opponents. Last weekend, the Cardinals dropped a 10-7 decision to No. 21 Southeastern in San Antonio. UIW rushed for 223 yards in the loss while out-gaining the Lions, 381-296 in total offense.
Redshirt freshman EJ Colson is completing 70.95 percent (210-of-296) of his passes with 16 touchdowns to just four interceptions while also rushing for 287 yards. Senior receiver Jalen Walthall is second in the league in receiving yards per game, averaging 90.9 yards per outing, while hauling in seven touchdowns. Defensively, linebackers Declan Williams and Dune Smith have combined for 183 tackles this season with Williams registering 12 tackles for loss and four sacks.
HCU will honor its seniors in a ceremony on the field beginning 30 minutes prior to kickoff.
