VB: Huskies Fall to UIW in Straight Sets to Close Regular Season

HCU turns its focus to the Southland Conference Tournament next week in Commerce

HOUSTON — The volleyball team wrapped up its regular season on Saturday afternoon, falling 3–0 (25–21, 25–14, 25–20) to Incarnate Word at Sharp Gym. The Huskies (12–17, 7–9 SLC) competed point-for-point early before the visiting Cardinals (16–12, 12–4 SLC) used consistent serving and a balanced attack to secure the sweep.

HCU opened the match with strong energy in the first set, jumping ahead 8–5 after kills from Cassidy Drapela and Allana Archie. The teams traded long rallies with ties at 10-10 and 16-16, but UIW strung together a 4-0 run late behind two kills from Finley Evans to edge the Huskies 25–21.

The second set saw the Cardinals' offense heat up, hitting .231 with just two errors, while HCU struggled to find rhythm. Despite a pair of back-row digs from Bianca Byerly and a block by Archie, UIW built an early 10–5 advantage and never looked back, taking the frame 25–14.

The Huskies fought to extend the match in the third. Drapela powered through with back-to-back kills to tie things at 11–11, and Madison Hess distributed the ball effectively, finding Chloe Richards and Taylor Bonner-Williams for quick strikes on the outside. However, UIW's front line responded with timely kills from Kyla Malone and Kitana Tuufuli, pulling ahead 20–17 and sealing the match at 25–20.

Drapela led all HCU hitters with 10 kills and 11 digs, recording her sixth double-digit effort of the season. Archie followed with six kills and two blocks, while Richards added five kills on a .286 hitting percentage. Hess totaled 27 assists and five digs, directing an attack that produced 34 kills overall.

Byerly paced the defense with a match-high 16 digs, joined by Anna Melgren with 10, helping HCU tally 51 total digs on the afternoon. The Huskies also collected two service aces, courtesy of Savanna Stevens and Melgren, and limited UIW to only four aces in return.

With the regular season complete, the Huskies turn their focus to postseason play at the Southland Conference Tournament. HCU will open the first round on Friday, Nov. 21, at 1 p.m., facing UT Rio Grande Valley in Commerce, Texas.
