VB: Huskies battle UTRGV in four sets at Sharp Gym

HCU looks ahead to Thursday’s 6 p.m. road match at Stephen F. Austin.

HOUSTON — Houston Christian dropped a 1–3 decision to UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday afternoon at Sharp Gym.

The Huskies opened strong, taking the first set 25–23 behind efficient attacking from Allana Archie and Joya Euhus, who combined for nine kills in the frame. HCU hit .382 as a team in the opener, closing out the set with back-to-back kills from Archie to secure the early lead.

UTRGV responded in the second, pulling ahead midway through the set and holding off the Huskies for a 25–20 win. HCU stayed within reach early but was slowed by six attack errors as the Vaqueros evened the match.

The third set saw a tight battle throughout, with neither team leading by more than three points until late. Kills from Taylor Bonner-Williams and Euhus kept HCU close, but UTRGV edged out a 25–23 win to take a 2–1 advantage.

The Vaqueros carried their momentum into the fourth, hitting an efficient .464 to seal the match 25–18. Despite a strong offensive showing from the Huskies, UTRGV's balanced attack proved decisive down the stretch.

Archie led HCU with 16 kills, followed closely by Euhus with 15 on an impressive .452 hitting percentage. Bonner-Williams added nine kills, while Peyton Fadal recorded 39 assists and two service aces. Anna Melgren anchored the back row with
12 digs, and Fadal and Bianca Byerly chipped in nine each.

As a team, the Huskies hit .275 with 55 kills and 48 digs, narrowly trailing UTRGV's .313 and 57 kills.

HCU (10–9, 5–1 SLC) will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 16, visiting Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
