VB: HCU Volleyball Closes Tarleton State Tournament with Dominant Win

Huskies Sweep Alcorn State in Final Match of the Tournament

STEPHENVILLE, Texas - Houston Christian University women's volleyball team concluded the Tarleton State Tournament with a strong win against Alcorn State, sweeping the match in straight sets. The Huskies dominated throughout, finishing the match with set scores of 25-14, 25-6, and 25-13.

In the first set, HCU established an early lead, sparked by a kill and service ace from Alexia Jones. Alcorn State managed to tie the score briefly at 3-3 with a kill from Sydney Valentine, but HCU quickly regained control. Aces by Erin Mims and Audrey Pearce helped HCU extend their lead to 10-7. Despite some errors along the way, the Huskies maintained their advantage, with Pearce and Katy Barger leading the offensive charge. Alcorn struggled with attack errors, and HCU capitalized, closing out the set on a strong note with another ace from Pearce to win 25-14.

The second set saw HCU dominate from the outset. A kill from Barger followed by three consecutive service aces from Tatiana Evans quickly gave the Huskies a 5-0 lead. Alcorn couldn't find an answer, as their attack errors and service mistakes piled up. HCU's defense, led by key blocks from Pearce and Ana Garza, stifled any attempts Alcorn made to close the gap. The set ended decisively at 25-6 in favor of the Huskies after a block error by Alcorn's setter, Ramona Pulu.

In the final set, HCU maintained their momentum with an early service ace by Alexia Jones. Strong offensive performances from Madison Hess, Pearce, and Barger kept Alcorn on the defensive. Despite brief rallies from Alcorn players Valentine and Jalayah Hamby, multiple attack errors hindered Alcorn's comeback efforts. Service aces by Bianca Byerly helped HCU pull away, and a final Alcorn service error ended the match with HCU taking the set 25-13.

Audrey Pearce was the standout for HCU, leading with 13 kills and 5 blocks. Barger added 9 kills and 3 blocks, while Peyton Fadal orchestrated the offense with 26 assists, also contributing 5 kills and leading the team with 8 digs. The Huskies' serving was on point, with Evans, Jones, and Byerly each tallying 3 service aces. Evans also had a well-rounded game, finishing with 5 digs and 3 assists.

HCU will now turn their focus to the Southland Conference, opening their conference schedule with a match against Nicholls in Thibodaux, Louisiana, on Thursday, September 26.
