HOUSTON – Houston Christian University continues its three-match homestand to begin the 2024 campaign when it welcomes IU-Indianapolis to Sorrels Field on Sunday evening.

The Huskies dropped its season-opener 3-2 on Thursday to Gardner-Webb University. The visitors got on the board twice before 20 minutes to take control before a
Freddy Ferguson goal pulled the Huskies to within one. A late first-half tally then pushed the lead back to two, 3-1 at the intermission for GWU.

Kaone Kolagano smashed a loose ball into the net just under two minutes into the second frame to pull HCU back to a one-goal deficit. The two teams then nestled in defensively, and neither team could hit the back of the net the rest of the way, allowing the visitors from North Carolina to escape Fondren Road with the victory.

The goal for Ferguson was his first for the orange and blue after transferring from VMI, one of seven transfers on the roster for the Huskies. Kolagano found the net for the second time in his career, the first since his rookie campaign when he scored the game-winner against Utah Valley.
Jordan Santa Cruz took the loss in the woodwork, allowing the three goals to go with two saves on the evening.

HCU looks to turn things around into a positive result against IU-Indy, who hits Sorrels on Sunday for the back end of their two-match two-step in the Lone Star state.

This will be the fourth meeting all-time between HCU and IU-Indy, formerly known as IUPUI. The Huskies hold a 2-1 lead over the Jaguars in the all-time series with the most recent encounter between the clubs coming on September 21, 2019 as HCU won 2-1 on a Daan Snellick goal three minutes into overtime.

IU-Indy finished 7-7-5 overall and 4-2-3 in Horizon League play last season, but return just one goal scored from last year's team, that coming from Brady Horn.

The Jaguars are 1-0 on the season having defeated UIW 2-0 in San Antonio on Thursday evening. Jose Antonio Herrera picked up both goals in the contest, the first of his career, to provide all the offense. Christian Nielsen added an assist while Mason Taylor picked up the first win of his career in the pipes with five saves.

HCU will have one more match on Fondren Road to complete the homestand, hosting cross-town foe North American University on Thursday evening at 7 pm. The Huskies will then embark on a four-match away stretch beginning September 1 at Gonzaga University.
