SB: Huskies bested by No. 19 Bears

Two big innings for Baylor; Roberts retakes RBI lead

WACO --- Houston Christian University started a four-game road stretch by dropping a Tuesday evening game to No. 19-ranked Baylor, falling 14-4 to the Bears at Getterman Field. The Bears used two big innings to take the mid-week affair over the Huskies, who will return to Southland Conference action this weekend.

HCU jumped out in front early in the first inning. Juls Garcia laced a one-out double to the gap in left center, and one batter later Jasie Roberts cranked a ball off the wall in center field, a two-out double that gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

Baylor would knot things up in the bottom of the opening frame. Shaylon Govan had an RBI single to right field to score Taylor Strain, who had singled to left and moved to second on a groundout.

In the second, the Bears would put a crooked number on the board to open things up. Govan once again had the big blow, a three-run homer to right field that pushed the lead to 6-1. BU would tack on another to make the score 7-1 after two innings.

The hosts would strike for another big inning in the fourth, getting four RBI singles from four different players as part of a seven-run frame.

HCU would hang a three on the board in the top of the fifth. Maddy Bailey walked and moved to second on a passed ball. She would advance to third on an infield single by AB Garcia. Bailey would come home on a passed ball, and after a Haylie Savage walk, it was Roberts again.

The senior catcher would go the other way, lacing a double off the wall in right center to score two. The two runs knocked in allowed her to retake the team RBI lead.

Jasie Roberts was 2-3 for HCU with three RBI. Her two doubles pulled her into a tie for 8th all-time with 35.

AB Garcia went 2-3 with a stolen base and run scored. Juls Garcia went 1-3 with a run scored.

Ronni Grofman suffered the loss as the first of four HCU pitchers on the evening, dropping her record to 3-5 on the season.

Govan was one of five players with two hits for the Bears, who rapped out 14 on the night. She would finish 2-2 with the homer, two runs and four RBI. Presleigh Pilon went 2-3 with two RBI and two runs scored for Baylor, which snapped a three-game losing streak in improving to 17-8 on the season.

HCU falls to 13-11 on the season. The Huskies will continue their week on the road when they travel to Hammond this weekend to face off with some more green and gold, taking on Southeastern Louisiana. The Lions sit in a first-place tie with Lamar after two weekends of Southland action. The three-game conference series begins with a twin-bill on Friday and concludes with a noon matinee on Saturday.
