MGOLF: Huskies Finish in 16th Place at 2024 Border Olympics

Pawlak and New close tournament with matching rounds of 74; Barrera joins with 75, all tie for 59th place

LAREDO, TX – HCU concluded the 2024 Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club finishing in 16th place following rounds of 299-293-297 for a 889 team total at 25-over par total.  
 
Sophomore Roy Barrera (76-72-75), senior Cooper New (77-72-74) and freshman Brooks Pawlak (75-74-74) led the Huskies this week, all finishing in a tie for 59th place, individually. Barrera fired a final round of 75, recording three birdies at the 8th, 12th and 15th holes for a seven-over par total for the week. Cooper New carded a final round of two-over par, 74, including a lone birdie on the par-5, 17th hole, to tie Barrera at seven-over par.

Pawlak fired back-to-back two-over par,74s, in the final two rounds to tie his teammates in a tie for 59th place. Pawlak, starting his round at the 14th hole, started with a hat trick of bogeys before a birdie at the par-4, 18th hole, helped him turn to the front nine at two-over par through five holes. After a bogey at the 3rd hole, Pawlak tallied a string of birdies on holes seven through nine to post two-under par on the front side. A trio of pars to finish the round following a blemish at the par-4, 10th hole, helped Pawlak post a two-over par final round. 
 
Freshman Benjamin Dabos (77-77-74) closed his tournament with a two-over par 74, recording 17 pars and a lone double-bogey at the par-3, 5th hole, to finish the week in a tie for 84th place at twelve-over par. 
 
After day one, Husky clubhouse leader Ben Caton (71-75-83) carded a final round of 11-over par, 83, to close out his tournament. The fifth-year senior finished 87th individually with a 13-over par, 229 total. 
 
Illinois State went wire-to-wire to claim the 2024 Border Olympics carding a nine-under par final round of 279 to finish at 32-under par, 16 strokes clear of Lipscomb, North Texas, and Rice, all finishing in a tie for second place at 16-under. Illinois State's Valentin Peugnet claimed the individual title following a final round of five-under par for an overall 17-under par total, five strokes clear of teammate Alex McCulla. Rice's Reggie Zhu finished in third individually at 10-under par. 
 
The Huskies return to action next week at the Gulf Coast Collegiate hosted by the University of New Orleans at English Turn Golf and Country Club in the Big Easy. The 54-hole tournament will see 36-holes of competition on Monday,February 26th, followed by the final 18-holes on Tuesday, February 27th
