VB: Huskies Fall in Opening Match of SLC Tournament

The team fought hard but fell short in a five-set battle.

HAMMOND, Louisiana – The HCU Huskies began their Southland Conference Tournament journey with a hard-fought loss to Stephen F. Austin (SFA) in a thrilling five-set match. Despite resilient efforts, the Huskies fell 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-21, 5-15).

SFA opened the match with a commanding start, driven by key kills from Harley Krause and Katherine Holtman. HCU countered with strong offensive efforts from Alexia Jones and Audrey Pearce, keeping the opening set competitive. However, critical attack errors in the final points allowed SFA to edge out a 25-23 victory.

HCU rebounded in the second set, showcasing improved coordination. Jones and Emerald Jacobs led the offensive charge, while Grace McLaughlin directed the attack with precision. Defensive plays from Pearce and Ana Garza stifled SFA's momentum, helping the Huskies secure a 25-22 win to even the match.

The third set saw SFA regain their footing behind pivotal kills from Krause and Kennedy Jones. HCU fought back with contributions from Pearce and Jacobs, but SFA's defensive blocking, led by Kyanna Creecy, disrupted the Huskies' rhythm. SFA pulled away late to claim the set 25-21.

HCU refused to back down, rallying in the fourth set with resilience and sharp execution. Jones and Garza spearheaded the attack, while Pearce made critical plays on both offense and defense. SFA struggled to keep pace as HCU capitalized on key opportunities, forcing a fifth set with a 25-21 victory.

In the decisive set, SFA surged ahead with superior execution. Krause and Holtman continued to dominate offensively, while Caroline Kahle's timely service aces proved pivotal. The Huskies couldn't overcome the early deficit, as SFA closed the set 15-5 to secure the match.

Despite the loss, HCU showcased a balanced effort. Jones led the Huskies with 14 kills, while Pearce and Garza added 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Jacobs contributed the team's lone service ace and tied Jones with a team-high 18 digs. At the net, Pearce and Garza recorded five blocks each, while McLaughlin directed the offense with an impressive 54 assists.
