SAN ANTONIO, Texas – This Saturday the HCU football team is set to face its third ranked opponent of the season when they take on the ninth-ranked UIW Cardinals at 2:00 p.m. at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium. Husky fans can listen in on Patriot Talk 920 AM with Luke Mauro providing play-by-play.
HCU (3-5, 1-2 SLC), coming off consecutive losses, faces a tough test in a Cardinals (6-2, 3-0 SLC) team that has won five-straight and sits atop the Southland Conference standings.
Last weekend, the Huskies dropped a 55-6 road decision to Stephen F. Austin. HCU placekicker
Dillon Fedor accounted for the team's six points, connecting on field goals of 37 and 44 yards. The senior is now 10-of-10 on field goal attempts this season.
A pair of offensive players,
Darryle Evans and
Deuce McMillan, continue to move up the program's all-time lists. Evans, a senior running back, is now sixth in program history in carries, with 166, and rushing yards, with 817. Additionally, he has the second-most 100-yard rushing games in program history with four in his last 15 games. McMillan, a junior wide receiver, is already fifth all-time in receptions, with 67, tied for fifth in receiving touchdowns, with seven, while his 820 yards receiving rank seventh.
UIW earned a 34-31 road win over Southeastern last weekend, forcing the Lions into five turnovers and scoring a pair of defensive touchdowns to stay atop the league.
Senior quarterback Zach Calzada is completing 67 percent of his passes for more than 2,100 yards with 20 touchdowns to just four interceptions. The Cardinals have a pair of receivers, Jalen Walthall and Roy Alexander, with 50 receptions each while Walthall leads the FCS with 11 touchdown receptions. Junior running back Dekalon Taylor leads the rushing attack, averaging 5.5 yards per carry and finding the end zone seven times.
Defensively, the Cardinals boast the ninth-best turnover margin in the FCS and the top red zone defense in the nation, allowing opponents to score in just 13 of 23 trips to the red zone. Defensive back Mason Chambers leads the team with 55 tackles along with five pass breakups and a pair of interceptions. Linebacker Mister Williams has racked up 10.5 tackles for loss while Devin Grant has five sacks.
HCU returns home to Husky Stadium next Saturday, Nov. 9, for its Homecoming matchup against Nicholls at 2:00 p.m.
