Huskies Show Fight Against Texas A&M-Commerce


 
COMMERCE, Texas - The Houston Christian University volleyball team faced a challenging match against Texas A&M-Commerce on October 26, ultimately falling with scores of 17-25, 19-25, 25-19, and 21-25.

In the first set, HCU started strong but succumbed to Texas A&M-Commerce's aggressive play, losing 25-17. Emerald Jacobs and Audrey Pearce led the offensive charge with consistent kills, while Grace McLaughlin contributed numerous assists. However, HCU struggled to maintain momentum against TAMC's formidable defense, highlighted by blocks from Carley Spachman and Peyton Roper. Ellie Baumert of TAMC shone with five service aces, putting significant pressure on HCU. Despite efforts to close the gap, HCU's errors and TAMC's resilience allowed the Lions to take the set.

The second set saw HCU fighting hard but ultimately falling short, with a score of 25-19. Jacobs continued to deliver key kills, while McLaughlin's accurate assists supported the offense. Audrey Pearce and Allana Archie made strong defensive plays, but TAMC surged ahead with impressive performances from Kitana Tuufuli and Avery Wilks. Jade Smith's defensive efforts and Baumert's aces were pivotal in securing the set for the Lions.

In a turn of momentum, HCU bounced back in the third set, winning 25-19. Jacobs played a crucial role with powerful kills, and Pearce provided steady offensive support. Tatiana Evans added an early service ace, helping set a positive tone. McLaughlin effectively directed plays with multiple assists, while the defense, led by Evans and Alexia Jones, made key digs to maintain control. Despite a strong response from TAMC, HCU's cohesive team effort allowed them to take the set.

HCU fought valiantly in the fourth set but ultimately fell to Texas A&M-Commerce, 21-25. Jacobs led the Huskies with 19 kills, while Pearce and Ravyn Dash contributed 15 and 11 kills, respectively. McLaughlin posted an impressive 49 assists, and on defense, Evans and Jones recorded 14 and 13 digs. For the Lions, Wilks delivered 16 kills, while Tuufuli and Baumert added crucial points, with Baumert registering five aces and 31 assists. Despite a late rally from HCU, TAMC held on to secure the win.

Looking ahead, the Huskies will travel to Natchitoches, Louisiana, to face Northwestern State on Thursday, October 31, at 6:30 p.m.
