VB: Huskies Set to Host Two SLC Matches

After SLC play with two wins, the Huskies will host the preseason favorites next


 
HOUSTON, Texas - The HCU volleyball team had a strong week to open Southland Conference play with wins against Nicholls and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and is set to host matches on Thursday and Saturday against SFA and UT Rio Grande Valley, the two teams picked first and second in the SLC preseason poll.
 
HCU (5-8, 2-0 SLC) has tallied 680 total kills this season, ranking third in the conference with 12.83 kills per set as a team. The Huskies' hitting percentage of .209 ranks seventh in the league while holding opponents to a .193 percentage. Defensively, their 2.1 blocks per setis fourth-best in the SLC.
 
Audrey Pearce is third on the team in kills per set, averaging 2.85 while hitting an impressive .273 and also ranking third in the conference with 1.26 blocks per set. Emerald Jacobs is the reigning SLC Offensive Player of the Week for her performance last week, hitting .431 and averaging 4.0 kills and 3.25 digs per set with 22 kills in the HCU win over the Islanders. Grace McLaughlin is one of just three SLC setters averaging better than 10 assists per set, averaging 10.02, with her average rising to 10.88 against SLC opponents.
 
SFA (10-5, 2-0 SLC) has won both of its first two SLC matches, defeating TAMUCC, 3-1, and UTRGV (4-7, 0-1 SLC), 3-0. The Ladyjacks have had a strong start, hitting .216 and averaging 12.5 kills per set. That hitting percentage is third-best in the conference, as is the team's 2.23 blocks per set.
 
Katherine Holtman is the team-leader with 2.93 kills per set while Kyanna Creecy boasts the top hitting percentage in the SLC, hitting .371. Jayden Flynn tops the assists category with 300, while Sophia Wilson follows with 184. Creecy and Izabella Ortiz form a strong defensive duo at the net, averaging 0.98 and 0.94 blocks per set, respectively.
 
UTRGV's lone conference match so far was last week's loss to SFA. The Vaqueros will play their second match on Thursday, at UIW before making the trip to Houston. UTRGV is hitting .218 and averaging 12.9 kills per set. Defensively, the Vaqueros average 13.8 dige per set and 1.2 blocks per set
 
Key leaders for UTRGV include Ilana De Assis, who ranks third in the league with 3.94 kills per set. Isabella Costantini leads the team in assists and ranks third in the Southland with 10.27 assists per set. Celianiz Cabranes leads the way defensively with 3.80 digs per set on the back line.

Thursday's game vs. the LadyJacks will start at 6:30 p.m. while Saturday's matchup with UTRGV is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
 
Next up, the Huskies will travel to San Antonio to face UIW on Tuesday, October 8, at 6:00 p.m. before returning home to host Lamar at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12.
