MSOC: Zeeman collects OVC Co-Defensive Player of the Week honor

Sophomore scored equalizer in 1-1 draw with UAB on Sunday

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. — Sam Zeeman was selected as Ohio Valley Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending September 3.

The sophomore defender from The Hague, Netherlands provided late heroics for the Huskies on Sunday afternoon, scoring an 89th minute goal to help HCU to a 1-1 tie with host UAB at the Soccer for the Cure Classic in Birmingham, Alabama.

Zeeman got downfield on a breakaway and Kevin Yamna fed him with a beautiful through ball from just inside midfield. Zeeman would then win a 1v1 to put home the equalizer at the 88:12 mark, giving him his first goal of the season and second of his career.

The Huskies went 0-1-1 on the week after dropping their Friday contest to Belmont 2-1. Zeeman played all 180 minutes in the pair of contests just three days apart. He has not missed a minute this season and has led a defensive effort that has allowed just six goals in four matches thus far. As a freshman last year, Zeeman was second on the club in minutes played.

The Huskies are now 1-2-1 on the season, and will return to action this weekend when they host a pair of games at Sorrels Field. HCU will host #25-ranked Oral Roberts on Thursday, and then face Santa Clara on Sunday. Both matches are slated for 7 pm kickoffs.

Similar to the season-opening homestand, the two visitors will also each face Incarnate Word on their trip to the Lone Star State.

SIU-Edwardsville had three players honored this week, after having two last week. Mitchell Murphy was named Player of the Week and Sam Gomez repeated as Goalkeeper of the Week with Will Harris sharing Defensive Player honor with Zeeman. The Cougars won at #15 St. Louis 2-0 in their only contest of the week.
