VB: Huskies Fall to UTEP in Straight Sets

The Miners sweep the Huskies at Tulane Invitational

NEW ORLEANS -- HCU was defeated in straight sets by UTEP (22-25, 11-25, 16-25) at the Tulane Invitational at Devlin Fieldhouse on Friday afternoon. After a tightly contested opening set, the Miners took control to take the sweep.

The Huskies (4-7) grabbed an early lead in the opening set with two kills by junior Audrey Pearce before the Miners scored back-to-back points off the hands of Kaya Weaver to tie the game at 7-7. Trailing 10-8, the Huskies scored four straight points including an ace by Jaleesa Coraccio and a kill by Cassidy Drapela to take a 12-10 lead. After short runs by each team, HCU would knot things back up at 20 with back-to-back kills by Drapela. UTEP closed with the final four points however to take the opening set 25-22.

In the second game the Miners (8-2) forced an early HCU timeout after taking a 10-5 lead. The Miners took up right where they left off before the break, putting together another six-point spurt to force another Huskies timeout. The two teams went point for point the rest of the way, but the lead was too much to overcome as UTEP took a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set saw the Miners again grab the early advantage at 11-5. The Huskies rallied off four straight points, highlighted by a solo block and a kill by senior Anna Gadway that cut the margin to tws. With the score 13-11, UTEP tallied six of the next eight points to go ahead by six 19-13. A solo block by Sara Arroyo pulled the Huskies within four points 20-16, but UTEP would close out the match with a 5-0 burst.

HCU was led by Drapela with eight kills while Pearce added six. Grace McLaughlin dished out 17 assists while Alexia Jones led the Huskies defensively with nine digs.

The Miners were led by Torrance Lovesee with 10 kills and six digs. Mattie Gantt recorded 19 assists while Hande Yetis added 16 assists and led UTEP's back line with nine digs.
