MARTIN, Tenn. – The HCU football team continues on its current three-game road stretch with a trip to face UT Martin at Hardy M. Graham Stadium on Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. Saturday's matchup with the Skyhawks will be aired on ESPN+ while Garrett Jones will provide audio play-by-play at HCUHuskies.com.
HCU (1-1) will play its first game against an FCS opponent this season after opening up with a 66-0 victory over NAIA-member Arkansas Baptist and then falling, 55-22, at FBS-member Western Kentucky this past Saturday.
Wide receiver
Karl Reynolds eclipsed 100 yards receiving at WKU, hauling in seven receptions for 106 yards and two touchdowns. He now has three TD receptions through two games, one of just 12 FCS players with three. The Huskies averaged 4.4 yards per carry with
Champ Dozier rushing 18 times for 80 yards and a score while
Jesse Valenzuela carried the ball eight times for 51 yards and quarterback
Colby Suits picked up 30 yards on eight carries.
The Huskies' defense ranks first in the FCS in tackles for loss, averaging 11.5 per game, with seven different players already recording multiple TFLs led by junior
Josh Ferguson with 3.5 in two games. All-American linebacker
Rodney Dansby leads HCU with 10.5 tackles per game while safety
Isaiah Cash leads the secondary with a pair of pass breakups and is averaging six tackles per game.
HCU already boasts two running backs with over 100 yards between
Champ Dozier, who has 177 yards on 29 carries with four touchdowns, and
Jesse Valenzuela, who is averaging 10.3 yards per carry on 11 carries. As a team, the Huskies are averaging just under 200 yards per game on the ground. At quarterback, Suits has been an efficient 25-of-39 with four touchdown passes and just one interception.
UT Martin (1-1) picked up its first win of the season this past Saturday with a 38-31 home win over Missouri State after opening the season with a 48-7 loss to Georgia. Sophomore running back Sam Franklin leads the FCS in rushing yards, with 305, after racking up 259 yards on just 20 carries in the Skyhawks' win over Missouri State. Last season, in UTM's 52-28 win over the Huskies in Houston, Franklin ran for 139 yards on eight carries with a score.
Following this Saturday's game, the Huskies will begin Southland Conference play on Saturday, Sep. 23, in Hammond, La. against a Southeastern team currently ranked 19
th and 22
nd in the two FCS top-25 polls.
