MSOC: Huskies slip past Santa Clara on Herrera's 89th minute strike

HCU stave off late Santa Clara rush before late clear and counter-attack for winner

HOUSTON — D'Alessandro Herrera's 89th minute strike helped HCU slip past Santa Clara 1-0 in the waning seconds at Sorrels Field Sunday evening. The Huskies staved off a last offensive rush by the visitors before turning it into a quick counter-attack which provided the game-winner.

The Broncos put together a buildup down the right side just yards from the corner flag, but a cross to the middle was cleared away well by Bangelee Sesay. His left-footed swipe found Victor Velasco in stride up the left side of the pitch.

Velasco would then race all the way up the sideline into the final third, where he then veered inside to find Herrera just out front of the penalty arc.

Herrera would take the delivery from Velasco and smacked a shot from the top right side of the 18-yard box to the opposite left corner of the goal. The ball slid just past the dive of SCU goalkeeper Felix Schaefer, breaking the hearts of the Broncos and giving the Huskies the win.

It was a solid result for the Huskies, who put up a strong bend-but-don't-break effort on the defensive end. The Broncos outshot HCU 19-7, including 9-3 on goal, and also had seven corners to four for the Huskies.

"This has certainly been a hard-work week for sure. To earn a draw on Thursday against a team that had been nationally ranked to then tonight having to grind and work so hard just to find a result," said Head Coach Ryan Pratt after the match.

"The effort that these boys put together these last few days is indicative of what it will take for us to find success moving forward. Now we have a nice little break here to get ourselves right physically and work on some things that need shoring up before that last non-conference trip. We are going to enjoy tonight but then it's right back at it."

Herrera collected his third goal of the season while taking two shots, both on goal. Alex Aitken had nine more stops between the posts, picking up his first clean sheet of the season.

Jack Civitts had four shots, three on goal while Adem Hamdaoua had five shots and two on goal for the Broncos, who fall to 1-4 on the season.

The Huskies are now even across the board, sitting at 2-2-2 on the season. HCU will take a 10-day break before heading west for their last pair of non-conference matches.

HCU will face former WAC foe Grand Canyon in Phoenix on September 20, followed by a trip up the California coast to face Pacific three days later.
