MSOC: Herrera captures OVC Offensive Player of the Week honors

Sophomore helped HCU to a 1-1 week with two goals and five total points

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. — The Ohio Valley Conference announced its first-ever weekly soccer awards on Tuesday morning, with HCU's D'Alessandro Herrera claiming the Offensive Player of the Week honors for the opening week of the 2023 season.

Herrera helped the Huskies to a 1-1 start to the campaign, accounting for five points on two goals and an assist while taking eight total shots, four on goal, in the two contests.

The sophomore midfielder from Houston had five shots, two on goal, while playing all 90 minutes of a 2-0 loss to St. Bonaventure on Thursday night. He then helped the Huskies rebound for a 4-1 victory over Omaha on Sunday night.

His header at the 26:34 mark of the first half against Omaha put HCU up for good 2-1. He would later add an 89th minute penalty kick to help put the match out of reach.

Herrera picks up where he left off in 2022, when he earned WAC All-Freshman honors after tying for second on the squad with 12 points and finishing third in goals scored.

The Huskies will return to action this upcoming Friday and Sunday, as they travel to Birmingham, Alabama to take part in the UAB Classic. HCU will face Belmont on Friday at 4:30 pm, followed by a 2 pm Sunday matinee with the host Blazers.

SIU-Edwardsville had the other two OVC weekly honorees, with Sam Gomez being named Goalkeeper of the Week and Aaron Crabtree nabbing the Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

This is the first season of men's soccer for the Ohio Valley, which announced it as its 19th sponsored sport in March.
