LUBBOCK, Texas – HCU closed out the Texas Tech Under Armour Challenge at United Supermarkets Arena on Saturday falling in four sets to both Wichita State and abilene Christian.
In match one vs. the Shockers (1-2), the Huskies (0-3) fell, 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 21-25, 16-25), and the dropped the following match to the Wildcats (1-0), 3-1 (21-25, 19-25, 26-24, 14-25).
In the matchup with Wichita State, HCU was led by sophomore
Cassidy Drapela with 14 kills with junior
Audrey Pearce racking up 11 kills paired with two blocks. Sophomore
Mollee Henicke dished out a career-high 36 assists while adding nine digs and four kills. The Huskies' defense was led by senior libero
Kaley Feris who tallied 18 digs while
Tatiana Evans added 16.
Wichita State out-hit the Huskies, .276 to .154, and was led by Emerson Wilford with 13 kills, 11 digs, and two blocks while Natalie Foster and Sophia Rohling added 12 kills each. Izzi Strand dished out 46 assists while Gabi Maas led the back line with 21 digs.
In match two against former Southland Conference rival ACU, Pearce led the way for HCU with nine kills, seven digs, and three blocks while junior
Sara Arroyo added eight kills. Freshman
Ana Garza ended the match with seven kills and three blocks, sophomore
Grace McLaughlin dished out 20 assists and five digs, and Feris continued to lead the back line with 22 digs.
ACU was led by Braden Bossier with 16 kills and four blocks while Bryley Steinhilber added 15 kills and 17 digs. Madeline Guffy dished out 52 assists along with 12 digs while Sara Carrizales led the Wildcats defensively with 17 digs.
The Huskies return to Sharp Gym for the Molly Howard-Gerwig Memorial Tournament starting on Thursday, August 31
and running through Saturday, September 2. The Huskies are set to match up against Prairie View A&M, Pennsylvania, Arkansas State, and UTRGV over the course of three days.
