SB: Huskies tripped by Texans in final non-conference tilt

HCU hosts league-leading McNeese in final regular season series this weekend

HOUSTON — HCU opened up a four-game homestand by dropping its final non-conference tilt, falling 5-2 to Tarleton State at Husky Field on Tuesday evening.

Tarleton got on the board first, getting two runs in the second frame on RBI singles from Amanda DeSario and Kelci Hill.

The Huskies came back with a pair of their own in the bottom of the third. Hadlee Tomczak walked to lead off the inning, and moved to second on a single to left field by Avery Drake. AB Garcia then singled on a bunt to load the bases.

Tomczak was erased at the plate on Haylie Savage's fielder's choice comebacker to the circle. Kaicey Hagler then lofted a sacrifice fly to left to score Drake and cut TSU's lead to 2-1. Jasie Roberts then followed with a solid single up the middle to score Garcia and knot things at two apiece.

In the fifth, Kayla Wallace laced a two-out triple to center field just under the glove of a diving Drake and one batter later came home on Jordan Dickerson's single up the middle, giving Tarleton the lead for good 3-2.

The Texans would tack on two insurance runs in the seventh, getting one on a throwing error and the second coming across the dish on an RBI double by DeSario that hit the chalk of the left field line.

HCU got seven hits from seven batters. Hagler and Roberts each went 1-2 with an RBI, and Drake and AB Garcia were both 1-4 with a run scored.

Ronni Grofman (5-4) took the loss in relief of starter Addy Praskifa. Grofman went 3.1 innings and gave up just three hits but she suffered the go-ahead run in the fifth. Lyndie Swanson came on for two innings of relief, giving up three hits and two unearned runs.

Kayla Wallace led the 10-hit offense for Tarleton, going 3-3 with two runs, while DeSario went 2-3 with two RBI.

Grace Garcia went the distance for the Texans (29-24), upping her record to 12-8 while allowing just seven hits and two runs with three K's.

FINAL NOTES AND WHAT'S UP NEXT:

Every team in the league will be in action this weekend with the exception of Nicholls, which ended their regular season last weekend.
