CORPUS CHRISTI —- Houston Christian University fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Cabaniss Athletic Complex Friday afternoon, dropping a 5-4 St. Patrick's Day decision as the Islanders salvaged the finale of the three-game series to open Southland Conference play.
TAMUCC got on the board in the second on a two-out RBI single to left from J.A. Garcia that brought home Monee Montilla, who had walked to start off the inning.
The Islanders would then hang a four-spot on the board in the third, taking advantage of an error, two hit batters and two bases-loaded walks in the frame.
In the fourth a sacrifice fly by Breanna Herrera scored
Jasie Roberts with HCU's first run, and an inning later, the Huskies would put up another on an RBI double by
Haylie Savage that scored
AB Garcia.
HCU mounted one last rally, cutting the lead to 5-4 with a pair of runs in the sixth. Everything started with two outs, as
Avery Drake and Garcia both singled. Savage would then get a base hit to the hole at second base, and a throwing error allowed both Drake and Garcia to score.
AB Garcia went 2-3 with three runs scored and a stolen base to lead the HCU offense. Savage went 2-4 with and RBI and
Avery Drake went 2-4 with a run and stolen base.
Addy Prasifka suffered the loss for HCU, dropping to 0-4 on the season.
Lyndie Swanson pitched a perfect 2.2 innings of relief to hold the Islanders at bay.
Paolina Perez went 2-3 with an RBI to lead the Islanders (13-11, 1-2 SLC), who had six players collect at least one hit.
Primrose Aholelei, who suffered the loss in
Katy Janes no-hitter on Thursday, went 4.1 innings and gave up two runs on six hits to earn her ninth win. Sydney Campion earned the save with 2.2 innings of work.
The Huskies, are now 11-16 overall and 2-1 in Southland play after taking the tightly contested weekend series with their rivals.
NEXT UP:
A Tuesday evening date in Huntsville with Sam Houston State University awaits the Huskies.
It will be the second meeting of the season with the Bearkats, who took a 9-4 win over the Huskies on February 26 in the finale of the Houston Tournament.
HCU will finally return home next weekend, taking on Incarnate Word in a three-game SLC series at Husky Field, March 24 and 25.
