VB: Huskies bounce back with sweep of New Orleans

HCU splits Louisiana trip; Feris moves into Top 5 for career digs

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – HCU salvaged a split of its trip to Louisiana, sweeping New Orleans (25-21, 25-13, 25-22) at the Human Performance Center on Saturday afternoon.

HCU came out firing in the opening set taking an early 5-1 lead. The Huskies pushed the advantage to five off a back row kill from Kaley Feris before the Privateers closed the gap to two, 12-10. The teams would go back and forth, and HCU would get kills by Cassidy Drapela and Anna Gadway to maintain the lead. A four-point run by UNO knotted the game at 20-20 and forced an HCU timeout, but out of that break, the Huskies regained control with three straight points capped off by an Audrey Pearce kill and went on to the 25-21 win.

In game two, the Huskies picked up right where they left off, scoring the first four points, highlighted by back-to-back kills by Drapela. UNO got it to within three points at 8-5 before the Huskies went on a game-changing 5-0 run which including two aces and a kill by Alexia Jones. The lead would grow to nine points off back-to-back kills by Sara Arroyo and the Huskies cruised the rest of the way, winning 25-13 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

With game three tied 5-5, HCU tallied four straight points, started and finished by kills from Pearce. The Huskies would maintain a four-point lead until UNO put together a rally to retake the lead. With game three tied at 15, Arroyo went on the offensive, putting together five kills down the stretch with Gadway and Pearce adding two each as well as HCU closed things out for the 25-22 match sealing win.

Arroyo led a trio of players in double-figure kills with 12 kills. Gadway had 11 and Pearce added 10 kills and four blocks, while Cassidy Drapela came one shy of making it a quartet with 10-plus kills. Grace McLaughlin dished out 36 assists and posted seven digs. Alexia Jones and Kaley Feris led the Huskies defensively with 13 digs apiece. Feris improved her career digs total to 1412, moving her into the top five all-time.

New Orleans was led by Karen Cordero Barr and Buse Kocakaya, each with 10 kills. Defne Eciroglu dished out 17 assists and Rita Zecchin led the Privateers back line with 16 digs.

The Huskies will return to Sharp Gym next Thursday, hosting Texas A&M-Commerce at 6:30 pm.
