THIBODAUX, La. – HCU and Nicholls were locked in a 7-7 tie for a good portion of the first half but the Colonels out-scored the Huskies 31-0 over the final 30:17 of the game en route to a 38-7 on Saturday afternoon at John L. Guidry Stadium in a Southland Conference matchup.
The Huskies (2-4, 1-2 SLC) got the ball to start the game but on the fifth play of the drive a
Colby Suits pass was deflected and intercepted at the HCU 45. The Colonels (2-3, 2-0 SLC) took six plays to travel 45 yards with a touchdown pass from Pat McQuaide to David Robinson. HCU had an answer on the ensuing possession, however, putting together a 14-play, 75-yard drive capped by a two-yard touchdown pass from Suits to
Darryle Evans.
The game remained knotted at 7-7 until late in the second quarter when Nicholls gained possession at their own 25-yard line after a
Wheeler Bowron punt with 1:55 left in the half. The Colonels marched 75 yards on just eight plays for a score and a 14-7 advantage at halftime.
Nicholls put the game out of reach in the third quarter with three touchdowns and a field goal on five possessions. Running back Collin Guggenheim, who scored a touchdown in the first half, ran for all three Colonels' touchdowns in the quarter for a four-touchdown game.
Ruperake Fuavai led all players with 12 tackles, including two tackles for loss.
Caleb Flagg and
Zae Smith each registered solo sacks for the Huskies with Flagg adding seven tackles and a pass breakup, as well. Offensively, Suits finished 17-of-38 for 170 yards with one touchdown pass and three interceptions. 10 different HCU players had at least one interception with none collecting more than three.
The Colonels out-gained the Huskies 441-220 with Nicholls totaling 237 yards on the ground and 204 through the air. HCU punter
Wheeler Bowron punted eight times for 338 yards, an average of 42.3 yards per punt, with two punts over 50 yards and a career-long of 53 yards.
The Huskies, after playing four of their first six games on the road, will be back home at Husky Stadium for their next two games beginning next Saturday, Oct. 14, vs. Prairie View A&M at 6:00 p.m.
