MSOC: Huskies suffer "Senior Day" defeat, season comes to close

HCU says goodbye to six playing for final time at Sorrels Field

HOUSTON —- HCU saw its season come to an end with a 2-0 defeat to Chicago State on Sunday at Sorrels Field. The loss put a damper on Senior Day, and also kept the Huskies from securing a spot in the OVC Tournament.

Needing at least a draw to advance to the postseason, the Huskies found themselves in a hole just two minutes into the contest. Donat Juhasz crossed a ball from the left side to the top of the 18-yard box, where an awaiting Iann Topete put home the left-footed one-timer to the bottom left corner just past a sprawling Alex Aitken

The goal would put the Huskies in chase mode for the rest of the match, as they continued to press for an equalizer. Chicago State didn't sit on the ball, and just after intermission in the 53rd minute, the Cougars got their second score. Armani Amrani picked off an errant pass by HCU in the back third, and then found Jaiye Sheppard for a left-footed finish across the keeper's face into the right corner.

From there, HCU mounted a couple of challenges, but each was met by solid defense from the Cougars. HCU would outshoot the visitors 15-12, including 6-5 on goal, but just couldn't put anything in the back of the net.

Ryan Okerayi and Ricardo Garcia each had four shots for the Huskies, and Alex Aitken had three saves in the loss.

Topete's goal was his eighth of the season, tops in the league. Juhasz provided his seventh assist, also tops in the league. The Cougars improve to 5-9-4 overall and 3-4-3 in the OVC, and with the win, qualify for the league's postseason tournament.

The Huskies conclude their first campaign in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 4-8-6 overall record and a 2-4-4 mark in league play. HCU saw off six seniors playing for the final time on Sorrels Field: Aldo Tarantini, Bangelee Sesay, Victor Velasco, Kharrel Medza, Jorge Mandujano and Zack Nicolaou
