HOUSTON, Texas – The Huskies sweep rival Lamar in straight sets at Sharp Gym (25-18, 25-18, 25-14). HCU extends their streak of sweeping Lamar in Sharp Gym to four straight matches resulting in a 12-0 set differential.
The Huskies (13-11, 8-4 SLC) got off to a fast start in the opening set taking a 6-1 lead kicked off by a kill from
Cassidy Drapela. HCU extended the lead to six points at 9-3 off back-to-back points starting with a kill by
Audrey Pearce before the Cardinals responded with a six-point run to tie the game at 9-9. The Huskies retook the lead with four straight points before Lamar got within two points at 13-11. The Huskies settled in scoring six of the next seven points capped off with back-to-back kills by Drapela to take a 19-12 lead. HCU closed out the opening set with a kill by
Sara Arroyo taking set one, 25-18.
In set two, the Huskies picked up right where they left off taking an early, 8-3, lead including two kills by Drapela and a block by Pearce. The Cardinals (1-22, 1-11 SLC) got within three points at 10-7 before HCU scored five straight points to lead by eight points into the media timeout at 15-8. Out of the break, the Huskies continued to roll increasing the lead to 10 points at 19-9 and captured the second set, 25-18.
After falling the first two points of the decisive third set, the Huskies rallied with a six-point run including three kills by Drapela to grab an early, 6-2, lead. The Cardinals narrowed the gap to two points at 9-7 before four straight points by the Huskies increased the lead by to six points. Another four-point run by HCU increased the lead to nine points at 17-8 and the Huskies cruised to a sweep claiming the third set, 25-14.
HCU was led by Drapela with 14 kills and seven digs. Arroyo added 13 kills to the Husky offense while Pearce added nine kills and two blocks.
Anna Gadway reached 1,000 career kills as a Husky against UIW on Saturday and added five kills in tonight's matchup.
Grace McLaughlin returned from injury dishing out 40 assists while
Jaleesa Caroccio and
Alexia Jones led the Huskies defensively with seven digs each.
Lamar was led by Taisha Rhone recording a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Lyric Jordan added 10 kills to the Cardinal offense while Jo Moffitt dished out 14 assists. The Cardinals back line was led by Kaeden Robinson with 13 digs.
The Huskies will return to action on Thursday against fellow conference powerhouse, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, at the Dugan Wellness Center in Corpus Christi, Tx.
